A job that began with cleaning an office, serving tea and bringing food orders eventually turned into a career in video editing for Sanjay, whose journey has become an example of how curiosity and self-learning can open new opportunities. Raj Vikram Gupta, an entrepreneur and co-founder of a Gurugram-based sports nutrition startup, recently shared Sanjay’s story on social media. According to Gupta, Sanjay joined the company on February 4, 2024, when the organisation had just started operating from its office. At the time, Sanjay’s role was far removed from video production. His responsibilities included keeping the workplace clean, serving tea and coffee and collecting food orders from platforms such as Swiggy and Zomato. But instead of limiting himself to the tasks assigned to him, Sanjay began looking for ways to learn from the people around him.
How Sanjay discovered an interest in video editing
Sanjay’s interest in video production began when he started accompanying the content team during shoots. According to Gupta, he would volunteer to help the videographer carry equipment and quietly observe what was happening during the production process. He was not simply interested in helping with the physical work. Sanjay wanted to understand how everything worked. He began asking questions about cameras, lighting and the reasons behind different filming techniques. His curiosity eventually encouraged him to take the next step and learn how to use a laptop. Once he became comfortable with the basics, Sanjay started exploring video editing after office hours. He taught himself how to use editing software and AI-powered tools, spending his spare time practising and improving his skills.Gupta described this as one of the most important parts of Sanjay’s transformation. Rather than waiting for someone to formally train him or for a new position to become available, he used the resources around him to start learning. His progress eventually led to a major change in his responsibilities. Sanjay moved from being an office assistant to working as a full-time junior video editor. He now edits videos as part of his regular work, according to Gupta. The change was significant enough that new office assistants had to be hired to take over the duties Sanjay had previously handled.
He did not wait for the perfect opportunity
What makes Sanjay’s story particularly striking is that his career change did not begin with a formal course, a new degree or a guaranteed opportunity. It started with asking questions. Gupta said Sanjay never waited for “permission or the perfect opportunity”. Instead, he created opportunities for himself by showing interest, learning from colleagues and putting in additional effort. His story also comes against the backdrop of a rapidly changing digital workplace, where skills such as video editing and familiarity with AI tools are becoming increasingly useful across industries. While learning new technology does not guarantee a career change, Sanjay’s experience shows how self-learning can help workers move beyond the responsibilities they were initially hired to perform. The journey also highlights the importance of being willing to start from the basics. Sanjay first had to learn how to use a laptop before he could begin experimenting with editing tools. Rather than being discouraged by the gap between his existing skills and the work he wanted to do, he treated the gap as something he could gradually close.
From financial challenges to a new career path
Gupta also shared details about Sanjay’s family background. His mother works as a domestic helper, while his father works as a doorman. Coming from a financially modest family, Sanjay had limited access to some of the opportunities that can make career transitions easier. Yet, according to Gupta, he relied heavily on his willingness to learn and his determination to improve. His journey is not a guarantee that everyone can change careers simply through hard work. Access to time, technology, education, mentorship and employment opportunities also plays an important role. But Sanjay’s experience offers a more practical lesson: career growth does not always begin with a promotion or a new job title.Sometimes, it starts when a person becomes curious about the work happening around them. From carrying equipment during video shoots to learning editing after office hours, Sanjay gradually turned an interest into a professional skill. What began as a job focused on keeping an office running eventually became a completely different career path. His story shows how curiosity, consistent practice and a willingness to learn can help a person discover opportunities that may not have been visible when they first entered the workplace.
