Silchar: Residents of Silchar will learn the composition of its municipal corporation on Tuesday, as counting begins at 8 am under tight security.Vote counting in the maiden Silchar Municipal Corporation (SMC) election will take place at the ISBT complex in Ramnagar. Cachar district administration has arranged seven counting halls, each with 14 tables. The exercise is expected to be completed in four rounds, officials said.Two assistant returning officers will oversee counting in each hall. Micro-observers, counting supervisors and assistants will also be deployed.Security has been strengthened at the counting centre and surrounding areas, with surveillance intensified at entry points. Police and civil officials will remain on alert throughout the exercise.Candidates, political parties and supporters have been asked to cooperate with the authorities and avoid gatherings.Saturday’s election was Silchar’s first civic poll since the erstwhile municipal board was upgraded to a municipal corporation. Voting took place in 40 of the 42 wards. BJP candidates Bijendra Prasad Singh and Bhakti Sen Talukder were elected unopposed from Wards 9 and 20, respectively.The corporation has 2,70,772 electors: 1,29,877 men, 1,40,884 women and 11 third-gender voters. Tuesday’s results will decide control of the 42-member civic body.
