Times News NetworkKanpur: Society for Conservation of Nature (SCON) on Monday launched a campaign on National Dolphin Day to raise awareness about conserving India’s national aquatic animal, Ganga dolphin, and protecting aquatic life and biodiversity.The organisation held awareness programmes in several schools with teachers’ support during Wildlife Week-2026. Activities at educational institutions included painting, slogan-writing and lectures on dolphin conservation to foster environmental responsibility among young people. SCON secretary-general Dr Rajeev Chauhan said the Ganga dolphin is not merely an aquatic animal but the biggest natural indicator of the health of sacred rivers and aquatic ecosystems.Principal of Jan Sahayogi Inter College Modhi, Manju Bhadauria said rising river pollution, dam construction, declining water flow and nylon nets have pushed the highly sensitive species into the endangered category. Its safety will indicate that rivers are clean and alive, she said.Reena Yadav, principal of Rajkiya High School Rajpur, said govt initiatives such as Project Dolphin can succeed only with active participation by local communities and youth.
