New Delhi: An Indian passenger, who arrived from Bangkok at Delhi airport, has been arrested for smuggling precious stones and jewellery items worth Rs two crore.Customs officials recovered 3,200 pieces when the passenger arrived at IGI Airport and a search conducted on his premises resulted in the recovery of 196.7 kg of rough emeralds, 221 carats of cut and polished rubies and 45 carats of cut and polished emeralds and relevant documents and items.“Based on spot profiling, officers of Airport Customs intercepted an Indian male passenger after he arrived at Terminal 3 from Bangkok on Oct 3. Detailed examination of baggage and personal search led to recovery of 3,200 pieces of precious stones and jewellery items, valued at Rs one crore,” said an official. He added that the passenger admitted to bringing the goods from Bangkok to Delhi.“The recovered items having a total value of Rs two crore have been seized under the Customs Act. The passenger has been arrested under section 104 of the Customs Act, 1962, for smuggling. Further investigation is underway,” said the official.
