KANPUR: A 47-year-old government doctor allegedly died by suicide at his apartment in Kanpur following an argument with his wife, news agency PTI reported quoting police. The surgeon reportedly used his licensed revolver in the incident on Sunday night.Sandeep Singh, who worked as a general surgeon at a community health centre in Kanpur Dehat, was found seriously injured inside his apartment at Blossom Apartment in Nirala Nagar.Police said Singh’s wife, Kanchan, rushed into the room after hearing a gunshot and found him on the floor. Family members immediately took him to Regency Hospital, where doctors declared him dead, commissioner of police Raghubir Lal told PTI.Preliminary investigation suggests that a marital dispute may have preceded the incident. Police said the couple had reportedly argued shortly before Singh went into the room with his revolver.“A detailed investigation will be conducted. If anything else emerges, it will be shared with the media,” Lal told PTI further.Deputy commissioner of police (South) Deependra Nath Chaudhary said forensic teams had taken possession of the revolver and the body was sent for a post-mortem examination.According to Singh’s father, Raj Bahadur Singh, he had spoken to his son at around 9.30pm on Sunday and asked about his well-being. He said Singh later had an argument with his wife before taking the revolver into another room.The family told police that Singh subsequently went to the prayer room, where he allegedly shot himself while sitting in front of the shrine.Singh was living separately with his second wife, their four-year-old daughter and infant son. His parents and younger brother reside in Paradevanpurwa in the Lal Bangla area of Kanpur.His cousin Mohit Singh said Sandeep had been married twice. His first marriage, to a Kanpur-based MBBS doctor in 2007, ended in a mutual-consent divorce in 2018. The couple had a 12-year-old son, he said.Singh married Kanchan, a homemaker from Kasganj, in 2019. His father said differences between the couple had emerged over what he described as minor issues, and that he would frequently step in to resolve their disputes.Singh completed his MBBS from Jolly Grant Medical College in Dehradun in 2006 and obtained his MS from GSVM Medical College, Kanpur, in 2010.He worked at Lala Lajpat Rai (LLR) Hospital for around nine years before being transferred to Kannauj. After spending nearly six years there, he was posted to a community health centre in Kanpur Dehat, where he had been working for about one-and-a-half years.Police said further investigation is underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.(With agency inputs)
