Colva: An additional sessions court has acquitted Parshuram Doranahalli, who was accused of killing his father in a 2008 case, after holding that the prosecution failed to produce medical evidence to establish that the death was homicidal. In his order, additional sessions judge Ram Prabhu Dessai said the prosecution’s case was based on speculation and could not support a conviction in the absence of medical proof. The prosecution alleged that Doranahalli, acting with his mother Renuka and sharing a common intention, assaulted Bhimappa and strangled him with their bare hands. It claimed the alleged motive was Bhimappa’s habitual harassment and assault of Renuka while under the influence of alcohol. Investigators further alleged that Bhimappa’s body was buried in the toilet-cum-bathroom of their rented room to destroy evidence. After the alleged crime, the mother and son reportedly returned to their native place in Karnataka. Both were tried for murder and for destroying evidence, but Renuka died during the trial. The judge also noted that Bhimappa’s two daughters lived in the same room, yet the prosecution did not explain why they were not named as accused. “The circumstances under which the prosecution singled out both accused as the authors of the crime are not stated. There is also no evidence on record to rule out any role played by the two daughters in the commission of the alleged crime,” the order said.
