Daltonganj: Palamu deputy commissioner Dilip Pratap Singh Shekhawat ran 9 km from the collectorate to Amanat riverbank at Singra on Gandhi Jayanti to promote fitness and cleanliness.Shekhawat and other runners also joined a cleanliness drive along the riverbank, stressing the need to keep rivers and their surroundings waste-free. Sources said saplings were planted to increase green cover.Around 10 rain-fed rivers and rivulets, including Koyel, Amanat, Jinjoi and Bataney, flow through Palamu. Their waters and banks are often choked with discarded plastic, empty bottles and other waste.In neighbouring Latehar district, Sadar sub-divisional police officer Sandip Kumar Gupta visited an old-age home in Latehar town and distributed clothes, sweets and fruits among eight inmates, including three women aged between 55 and 60.Caretaker Sushant Sahay said some inmates had been abandoned by their sons, while two had no children. Gupta gave saris to the women and dhotis to the men, besides five additional dhotis for the home.Sahay said the inmates had not expected visitors on Gandhi Jayanti. The home, run by NGO Jharkhand Swabhiman, also cares for a male inmate who is cared for by staff members.
