Mysuru: Mysuru district minister Yathindra Siddaramaiah on Friday paid floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi at Gandhi Square on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti.Yathindra garlanded Gandhi’s statue and offered flowers as a mark of respect. He recalled Gandhiji’s immense contribution to India’s freedom struggle and said his ideals of truth, non-violence, peace and social equality continue to inspire generations. His principles remain relevant even today and provide valuable guidance in building a just and responsible society, he added.The minister urged people, particularly the younger generation, to understand and follow Gandhiji’s ideals in their daily lives and contribute towards strengthening social harmony, equality and national unity.Mysuru Division of South Western Railway also observed Gandhi Jayanti and Lal Bahadur Shastri Jayanti at Gandhi Bhavan and concluded Swachhata Hi Seva (SHS) 2026 campaign. Mudit Mittal, DRM, Mysuru, paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri and highlighted the importance of cleanliness, responsible public service and active participation of all. Prizes and certificates were distributed to railway staff, Safai Mitras and students of Lalitha School for their participation in SHS activities.SHS 2026 campaign was conducted from Sept 17 to Oct 2, 2026, under the theme “Swachhata Mein Sahbhag; Swachh Bharat, Viksit Bharat.” A total of 852 cleanliness target units were transformed and closed during the campaign, with around 2,500 participant engagements. Awareness programmes on waste segregation, Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, water conservation and avoiding single-use plastics were conducted at various locations. Six health check-up camps benefited 292 Safai Mitras and their dependents.On Oct 1, a mass Shramdaan was conducted at Mysuru Railway Station under “Ek Din, Ek Ghanta, Ek Saath”, with around 320 officers, supervisors and staff participating.‘Imbibe Gandhi, Shastri ideals, work towards building responsible society’Mandya: Principal district and sessions Judge C Chandrashekhar called upon people to imbibe the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi and former PM Lal Bahadur Shastri and work towards building a peaceful, honest and responsible society. Speaking after inaugurating the 157th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and the 122nd birth anniversary of Lal Bahadur Shastri, Chandrashekhar said commemorating great leaders should not be confined to offering flowers to their portraits.Recalling Shastri’s contribution, he described him as an embodiment of simplicity, honesty and moral responsibility. Shastri’s decision to resign as Railway minister, accepting moral responsibility following a train accident, was an example of accountability in public life, he said.
