October 3 will be a big day in Indian cricket. The men’s team will be up against their arch-rivals for the Asian Games 2026 gold medal in cricket. Imagine the occasion, India vs Pakistan in a final, it does not come bigger than this.

Unfortunately, neither team has played much cricket in the lead-up to this game. The quarterfinals were cancelled due to rain, and the two teams advanced to the semis based on better seeding. In the two semifinals, we saw that spin played a major role in deciding the outcome.
Now, on the eve of the final, the two bowling attacks, the composition of the two teams, and their recent results give us interesting insights into the match.
Our pre-match prediction model
First, let us consider how the wicket has played in the two semifinals. In the Bangladesh vs Pakistan semifinal, only 223 runs were scored in 24.3 overs, while 11 wickets fell. In the India vs Sri Lanka semifinal, 224 runs were scored in 29.5 overs while 17 wickets fell. The most revealing thing to take from all these is that 22 of the 28 wickets that fell went against the spinners. So, the quality of spinners in the bowling attack will play a huge role.
India’s routes to win
The playing XI that India fielded against Sri Lanka had Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Ravi Bishnoi, and Jasprit Bumrah as bowling options. Besides, Abhishek Sharma also stepped up with the ball. And what they did is there for everybody to see, while defending 169, India bundled out Sri Lanka for just 45 runs.
The spinners did pick up five of the seven wickets that fell, but in the pace department, India had Jasprit Bumrah. He has proved his credentials multiple times on big stages, especially when one remembers the effort he put in against Pakistan on a similar slowish wicket in the T20 World Cup 2024. This shows that in bowling, India have two different routes to tilt the game in their favour.
Looking at the batting, Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi are expected to give them a fiery start and set the stage for a win. However, in the semifinal against Sri Lanka, we have seen that India lost them early. But Ishan Kishan stood up, and India still had players like Tilak Varma, Shreyas Iyer, or Shivam Dube who had proved themselves on big stages earlier. This shows that India have great depth and multiple ways to escape, even in batting.
Pakistan’s way to a win
In the Pakistan vs Bangladesh semifinal, we saw that Pakistan would come with great depth and variety in their spin department. Sufiyan Moqim will pose a major threat to India, and the emergence of Saim Ayub only strengthens the attack’s quality. But what Abrar Ahmed did in the match exposes the biggest flaw. He gave away runs at a critical stage, allowing Bangladesh back into the game.
Looking at their pacers, Ahmed Daniyal offered control but could not pick up wickets. Mohammad Wasim Jr. failed to get a breakthrough and also failed to contain runs when he was entrusted with the ball. This shows the basic flaw in the Pakistan team: a lack of depth and volatility in players’ performances.
The batting lineup includes some interesting names, such as Maaz Sadaqat, Saim Ayub, Sahibzada Farhan, and Usman Khan. But in the match against Bangladesh, we saw the game go down to the wire with Abdul Samad and Hasan Nawaz bailing out the team. Even in previous contests against India, we have seen names like Farhan, Ayub, and Usman Khan falter when the situation demanded their presence.
This gives us the insight that Pakistan have the names, the ingredients, the explosiveness and composition to win the game. But it will come down to how they hold their nerves and perform under pressure.
The 58-42 probability split
When we consider the teams’ composition, we can give equal weight to both teams based on their on-paper strength.
Now, the venue factor might tilt the balance slightly in India’s favour. While both India and Pakistan have spinners, the experience in the Indian side is a bit more extensive. Also, the presence of Jasprit Bumrah, with his experience, variety, and ability to perform under pressure, leaves little doubt about which way this should shift.
In the end, the batting of the two teams. Pakistan have firepower, but it comes with high volatility. India have some performers who can really bring out their best under pressure. If there are any doubts about it, ask the Pakistan team.
So, considering all the factors and assigning different weightages to them, we conclude that India will be ahead 52-48 in the Gold Medal match against Pakistan.
