Panaji: A privately owned ferry drifted from its position while a diesel tanker was being driven onto it at the Adpai ferry point, but a mishap was avoided as the ferry remained in shallow water. The river navigation department (RND) said the vessel was not part of the RND ferry service. It said the owner had not taken permission to use the Adpai ferry ramp.RND director Vikram Rajebhosale said the ferry slipped backwards during manoeuvring because it was not properly secured to the mooring pile. The ferry was brought back into position and the tanker was removed without major damage, he said.Rajebhosale said regulatory oversight for such matters is expected to shift to the Goa Maritime Board under the new maritime legislation, including licensing and certification, and that RND is therefore not authorised to take action against the private ferry owner.
