rGuwahati: Four Assam Police personnel in Cachar district have been placed under suspension with immediate effect, pending a departmental enquiry, for stopping an ambulance to allow chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s convoy to pass through Silchar on Wednesday.The chief minister Sarma, who was on a one-day programme at Silchar ahead of the October 3 municipal polls, took to social media to apologise directly to the patient and their family after a video emerged showing an ambulance waiting as his convoy passed through the Ramnagar ISBT area.Sarma in his post on X on Wednesday added, “No Chief Minister’s passage should EVER take precedence over a life in need of urgent care,” and said he had repeatedly directed officials to ensure VIP movement does not disrupt ordinary citizens or emergency services. He ordered an inquiry into why his directions had not been followed and said strict action would be taken against those responsible.Following the incident, Cachar Senior Superintendent of Police Partha Protim Das issued a formal order placing the four personnel under suspension pending departmental enquiry into alleged negligence of traffic duty at route-lining duty.The four include SI Bijoy Goswami, in-charge of Srikona Police Point, under Silchar PS, SI Sibsankar Das of National Highway Way Police Point, LNK Jahurul Islam of Katigorah PS and LNK Kawsar Ahmed Barbhuiya of Silchar traffic branch.As per the order, the suspended personnel have been directed to report immediately to Police Reserve, Silchar, deposit their government kits, attend daily roll call, and not leave headquarters without proper permission. They will continue to receive substantive allowances as per admissible rules during the suspension period, which remains in force until further orders.
