Silchar: Heavy rain caused water and muck to overflow onto the tracks between Kawnpui and Mualkhang on Mizoram’s Bairabi-Sairang railway section on Wednesday afternoon, prompting the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) to suspend train movement and cancel or curtail several services.The NFR said train movement on the affected stretch had been suspended temporarily as a safety precaution. Track assessment and restoration work were under way, it said.Railway officials said 20 buses were being arranged at Bairabi to ferry stranded passengers of Kolkata-Sairang and Silchar-Sairang Express trains to Sairang and Aizawl.The disruption comes on the Bairabi-Sairang line, which provides rail connectivity to the Mizoram capital region.According to NFR, Sairang-Guwahati Express scheduled to depart on Sept 30 and Sairang-Silchar Express scheduled for Oct 1 have been cancelled.Silchar-Sairang Express, which began its journey on Wednesday, will terminate at Bairabi. Its service between Bairabi and Sairang has been cancelled.Kolkata-Sairang Express, which started its journey on Sept 29, will also terminate at Bairabi, with the Bairabi-Sairang portion cancelled.Sairang-Kolkata Express scheduled to depart on Oct 1 will instead originate from Hailakandi, with its service between Sairang and Hailakandi cancelled.Similarly, Guwahati-Sairang Express, which began its journey on Wednesday, will terminate at Hailakandi. Its service between Hailakandi and Sairang has been cancelled.The railway authorities advised passengers to take note of the changes and make the necessary arrangements.
