The film chronicles the life of Nambi Narayanan, who was accused in an espionage case before being cleared of the charges. ‘Rocketry: The Nambi Effect’ premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2022 and received a standing ovation.
R Madhavan’s transformation for Nambi Narayanan
R Madhavan wanted the appearance of the characters to remain as authentic as possible. He explained that the film required him to portray Nambi Narayanan from the age of 29 to 79.“He’s bigger than James Bond … I play him from 29 to 79 years of age and we have achieved it without prosthetics. Every look that you have seen, there’s no wig, padding or filled. All the scientists that you see in this film grew their hair, put on weight, and lost weight to look original,” said R Madhavan, as quoted by Gulf News. The actor spent nearly two and a half years researching ways to gain and lose weight quickly. A conventional transformation schedule would have required several months, something the production could not accommodate.“I researched for about two and a half years on how we could put on and lose weight rapidly. I didn’t have six months or the budget would have gone into a different orbit. I had my jaw broken and teeth re-arranged,” said R Madhavan.
How R Madhavan gained weight
R Madhavan used different food choices to alter his appearance within a limited period. He ate cake to increase his weight for the portions that required him to appear heavier. The actor then changed his diet when the story moved to another period in Nambi Narayanan’s life. Beetroot and cucumber were among the foods he consumed while trying to lose weight rapidly. His transformation extended beyond his body. R Madhavan also changed his hair to portray the scientist during his later years.
He spent hours changing his hair
The actor reportedly spent more than 14 hours a day getting his hair dyed grey. The lengthy process was required for the portions showing Nambi Narayanan at an advanced age.The demanding routine also worried R Madhavan’s wife. She apparently believed the extensive treatment could eventually cause him to lose his hair.“And during that time, my wife completely believed that I’ll go bald because of the sheer amount of torture I was putting my head and hair through,” said R Madhavan.
R Madhavan’s approach to losing weight
Earlier, R Madhavan also spoke to The News Minute about his approach to achieving a leaner physique for ‘Vikram Vedha’.“I’m glad that I’ve managed to achieve this look without any workout and just followed my own secret diet, which got me such a fantastic result. I do not eat after 6 pm and ensure that there is at least a five-and-a-half-hour gap between two meals.”R Madhavan later elaborated on his routine while responding to a clip from his Curly Tales interview. He listed intermittent fasting, controlled meal timings, walking and adequate sleep among the practices he followed.“Intermittent fasting, heavy chewing of food 45-60 times (drink your food and chew your water), last meal at 6.45 pm (only cooked food, nothing raw at all after 3 pm), early-morning long walks and deep sleep at night (no screen time 90 minutes before bed), plenty of fluids, lots of green vegetables and food that is easily metabolised by your body and healthy. Nothing processed at all.”
