Noida: Amity University Uttar Pradesh has conferred an honorary Doctor of Science degree on Nobel laureate Prof Roger D. Kornberg in recognition of his contributions to scientific research and education.
Kornberg, Professor of Structural Biology at Stanford University School of Medicine, received the 2006 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his studies of the molecular basis of eukaryotic transcription, the process through which genetic information is copied from DNA into RNA.
The university also conferred an honorary professorship on Prof Yahli Lorch, Professor (Research) in Structural Biology at Stanford University School of Medicine, recognising her work in the field.
Accepting the honorary doctorate, Kornberg spoke about the relationship between scientific discovery and innovation, and encouraged students to pursue scientific problems driven by curiosity.
He said scientific innovation involves both discovery and application, noting that some important discoveries were made without an immediate practical application in mind.
Ashok K. Chauhan, Founder President, Amity Education Group, said the recognition of the two scientists was intended to acknowledge their contributions to research and scientific advancement.
Atul Chauhan, Chancellor, Amity University Uttar Pradesh, said the scientists’ work represented the role of research in advancing knowledge and encouraged students to take on challenging problems.
