The CWC meeting resolved that the party should launch nation-wide agitations – to be finalised at the INDIA bloc leaders’ meeting on Wednesday – against ECI, especially CECs, conduct of SIR, which the party alleges was designed for ‘vote theft’.
It is learnt that the decision to expand Congress’ demand for CEC’s resignation to include that of Modi and Shah was taken after party chief Mallikarjun Kharge said that the party should “go beyond the small fish and target the topmost leaders”, something promptly backed by Rahul Gandhi. However, some party leaders privately wonder whether this ‘mega wish list for resignations’ would actually dilute pressure on CEC.
“CWC resolves to: Demand the immediate resignation of CEC, who has forfeited all moral and institutional authority; demand the immediate suspension of SIR in view of serious concerns…; demand immediate restoration of the 13 crore 30 lakh names removed from the electoral rolls. This brazen ‘vote chori’ has been organised by CEC on behalf of the prime minister and the home minister. Nothing short of their resignation will ensure the safety of our Constitution and hard-earned democracy,” the CWC resolution said.
Sources said Gandhi told the meeting that Congress should go all out against the Modi government and CEC “like the way the 1930 Lahore plenary” launched the ‘Sampoorna swaraj’ agitation. Gandhi also claimed the 2024 Lok Sabha poll was a “fixed match”.
