Kolkata: Only one student out of 19 called for recording their statements turned up before the judicial enquiry commission, which was formed by Jadavpur University to investigate the Aug 19-20 campus vandalism and students’ assault.An official claimed during the hearing, the student made allegations against 14 people. “Eleven out of those 14 have been called on Oct 12. The rest three will be called later,” the official said. “The student’s allegations were against ABVP and right-wing students.”The panel, headed by Calcutta HC retired judge Pranab Chattopadhyay, held its third meeting on Salt Lake campus on Monday. “Of the 19 people we summoned, only one came to record his statement. One sent a letter, saying he/she did not send any written deposition to the commission,” said an official. “Among those summoned, six were from the Salt Lake campus but none turned up and they did not cite any reason.”Sociology student Anubhab Gupta said, “Some of my friends and I missed the hearing as we had internals. We asked the VC on Monday for alternative dates. Also, travelling to Salt Lake from Jadavpur is troublesome. We would ask the commission to record statements here.”The commission, after receiving statements from 25, photos and video footage, had called the 19 together as their statements were found similar. “Our priority is to finish the probe fast. We will carry on irrespective of who records statements,” said a source.
