Guwahati: Assam Police have registered a case against Gauhati University student Nimisha Thakuria’s alleged lover Ashiq Ali in connection with her death and produced him before a local court on Monday. The court granted eight days’ police remand.Nimisha (22) was found unconscious and later died at Dharapur homestay on the outskirts of Guwahati on Saturday. She was referred to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), where doctors declared her dead on arrival.Police said the case against Ashiq was registered under Sections 127(2), 117(2), 70(1) and 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The sections relate to wrongful confinement, voluntarily causing grievous hurt, gang rape and murder, respectively.Police from Azara Police Station have also detained Mintu Ali, another employee of the homestay where Nimisha and Ashiq had stayed. According to police, Mintu facilitated their stays and allegedly supplied alcohol to them. “We have detained him for questioning, and we are looking into all possible angles regarding the case,” said Balin Deuri, DCP (West).Police have not disclosed the names of any other people allegedly linked to the case.Nimisha’s Instagram account was taken down and removed from public access on Monday following a request from her parents, who sought to protect her privacy during the investigation. The Instagram account of Ashiq was also removed from public access on Monday.CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said investigators would examine all statements made by Nimisha on Facebook and elsewhere regarding the incident, including references to phone calls, going home and coming to the homestay, while ensuring that the inquiry is conducted properly.“I would only say that all of us should learn how to keep ourselves safe. And she is not a minor, she is an adult. So I think we should understand how we ought to conduct ourselves. We have certain values and traditions, and if we conduct ourselves within those values, society will remain in a better state,” Sarma said.
