Agartala: Former Tripura chief minister Manik Sarkar’s convoy was allegedly attacked in Bamutia on Sunday morning.CPM MLA Nayan Sarkar alleged that BJP cadres stopped the convoy in the Kalibazar area, vandalised escort vehicles and hurled eggs at Sarkar’s car. Sarkar was unhurt. CPM workers were taken safely to their party office.BJP spokesperson Nabendu Bhattacharjee denied the allegations, saying, “BJP doesn’t pursue such acts against any leader; the incident might be the spontaneous reaction of the people who suffered during the Left Front’s rule over 25 years.”Sarkar was travelling to a CPM organisational conference in Bamutia when a group allegedly stopped the convoy for about 40 minutes, raised slogans against him and asked him to return.CPM sources said one escort vehicle was damaged as tensions remained high. Party supporters later gathered and protested the alleged attack. The alleged assailants eventually left after resistance from CPM supporters, and Sarkar later attended the conference, the party said.CPM state secretary and leader of opposition Jitendra Chaudhury expressed concern over the political climate and urged CM Manik Saha to maintain normalcy and not follow the path of political vendetta allegedly adopted by his predecessor, Biplab Kumar Deb.
