Bhubaneswar: The rescued Royal Bengal tiger cub, which had been without food for several days after getting separated from its mother, consumed around 2.5 kg of meat mixed with oral medication in a single feeding in Similipal Tiger Reserve on Saturday.In a written communication, Similipal Tiger Reserve field director Prakash Gogineni said the cub responded positively after consuming the meat. “It remained calm and is slowly gaining strength,” the note said.Veterinarians will collect its blood samples to check key health parameters and detect any underlying ailments before shifting the cub to a protected enclosure, earlier prepared for tigress Yamuna, in Similipal’s south division for rehabilitation. “Veterinarians are monitoring the cub’s health and behaviour at the observation facility in Thakurmunda,” said PCCF (Wildlife) Prem Kumar Jha.The cub strayed into Khaparakhia village under Karanjia wildlife division in Mayurbhanj district on Thursday after getting separated from its mother. It took shelter in a cattle shed and was spotted by villagers, who alerted forest officials. Wildlife authorities said separation of tiger cubs from their mothers before 18 months is rare. Officials are yet to determine the cub’s sex as detailed examinations are still underway.Officials said the cub will not be released into the wild immediately and will undergo rehabilitation and health assessment in the secure enclosure. Tiger cub dispersal from Similipal is uncommon. Earlier this month, forest authorities seized the hide of a sub-adult melanistic tiger from near a human habitation. Three persons were arrested. Despite the presence of villages around Similipal, officials said tigers avoid human contact, making the cub’s entry into a cattle shed unusual.
