Kanpur: A 19-year-old BSc student was killed after a man allegedly ordered his associates to run an SUV over a rival following a verbal spat at a tea stall in Kannauj’s Mahmudpur Paith village on Thursday night. The intended target escaped, but the SUV allegedly ploughed into a group of people, killing the student and injuring five others.The deceased, Ashish alias Bhollu, a resident of Rampur village, had enrolled in a BSc Agriculture course at Major SD Singh University in Mohammadabad, Farrukhabad, only a week before the incident.According to police and eyewitnesses, the incident began around 9 pm when Arvind Singh (40) stopped at a tea stall while returning from a cold storage. Shyam Singh alias Matru, a resident of Mahmudpur Paith, was also at the stall.The two reportedly got into an argument during a round of banter. The verbal spat soon escalated into a physical fight, following which both men called their associates to the spot.As Ashish and others tried to intervene and stop the fight, Shyam’s associates allegedly arrived in an SUV.According to an eyewitness, Arpit Singh, Shyam allegedly ordered the driver to run the vehicle over Arvind, accusing him of challenging him during the argument.Arvind managed to move out of the vehicle’s path. The SUV, however, allegedly continued towards the group and hit Ashish and five others before crashing into a roadside pole.An eyewitness alleged that the vehicle was driven over Ashish twice. He suffered critical injuries and was rushed to hospital, where doctors declared him dead.The other injured victims, Jafreen, Prithvi Singh, Shiva, Aditya and Rakesh Dohre, were rushed to a hospital.Ashish’s cousin Aditya Singh has filed a complaint naming Shyam Singh, Ankit Singh, Pankaj, Pawan, Ashish Tomar and Shubham Singh.Police registered a case against the six accused under various charges, including murder. All the accused were absconding, police said, and teams have been formed to trace them.Superintendent of Police Vinod Kumar said the incident followed a dispute between two groups and that an suv was allegedly driven into the group, resulting in the student’s death. Police are examining eyewitness accounts and other evidence to establish the exact sequence of events and the individual roles of the accused.
