Belagavi: Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) will hold its 26th annual convocation at its Jnana Sangama campus on Saturday, with more than 75,000 students set to receive their degrees.
Three eminent educationists will also be conferred honorary doctorates during the event.
The convocation will be presided over by governor and chancellor of State Universities Thaawar Chand Gehlot. Higher education minister Basavaraj Rayareddy will attend the event, while DCM G Parameshwara will be the chief guest.
Announcing the details at a press conference on Wednesday, VTU vice-chancellor Prof S Vidyashankar said that 74,763 undergraduate students and 329 PhD scholars are eligible to receive their degrees at the convocation. The undergraduate graduates include 74,009 students from BE/BTech programmes, 725 from BArch, 12 from BPlanning and 17 from BSc programmes.
Honorary doctorates
VTU will confer honorary doctorates on Dr Sabitha Ramamurthy, president of CMR Jnanadhara Trust; Dr MP Shyam, president of RV Education Committee Trust; and Prof TG Sitharam, former chairman of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). The honours are being conferred in recognition of their contributions to higher education and academic development.
45 students to receive 94 gold medals
A total of 94 gold medals will be awarded to 45 meritorious students.
The medals include 38 VTU Gold Medals and 56 Endowment Gold Medals. Of the 56 Endowment Gold Medals to be awarded, 49 carry cash prizes, providing additional recognition to meritorious students. Another 300 students have secured university ranks.
Bengaluru Institute of Technology leads in ranks
Bengaluru Institute of Technology recorded the highest number of university rank holders, securing 29 ranks.
It was followed by Bapuji Institute of Engineering and Technology with 16 ranks and RNS Institute of Technology, Bengaluru, with 13. CMR Institute of Technology and Maharaja Institute of Technology secured 11 ranks each.
