Chandigarh: Shiromani Akali Dal (Punar Surjeet) on Wednesday sought a special investigation team (SIT) probe into allegations against former SGPC member Amarjit Singh Chawla, with a party delegation meeting Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann and seeking his intervention.The delegation sought an impartial probe into the FIR registered against Chawla and subsequent developments. It demanded that the SIT be headed by an impartial officer and complete its investigation within 15 days.The delegation alleged that Chawla was accused of raping a woman who had come from abroad to Sri Anandpur Sahib and sought investigation into the circumstances surrounding her arrival in Punjab, including who arranged air tickets for the woman and her daughter-in-law from Bahrain.It also sought an inquiry into the woman’s alleged arrest at New Delhi airport in connection with a fraud case, her stay in Nabha jail and claims that she received VIP facilities there. The delegation further sought investigation into whether she met former minister Bikram Singh Majithia while both were lodged in the jail.The delegation also sought an inquiry into the woman’s subsequent stay at Bhai Bachittar Singh Niwas in Anandpur Sahib, including who took her there, the vehicle used and people who remained in contact with her.The delegation comprised party senior vice-president Karnail Singh Peer Mohammed, general secretaries Davinder Singh Sodhi and Bhupinder Singh Shekhupur, SGPC executive committee member Mithu Singh Kaneke and SGPC member Jaswant Singh Padhaun.
