Srinagar, Sep 22: More than 100 students participated in an interactive Standards Parliament organised by Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) Standards Club, Sri Pratap College, Srinagar, at the College Auditorium on Tuesday.
The programme was held on the theme “BIS and Importance of Standards for Health and Safety Concerns in Society.”
The programme was organised under the patronage of Dr. Haris Izhar Tantray, Principal, Sri Pratap College, and under the mentorship of Dr. Javaid Hassan.
The event began with an introduction to the Bureau of Indian Standards, standardisation and consumer safety by Club Mentor Dr. Javaid Hassan. Addressing the gathering, Principal Dr. Haris Izhar Tantray encouraged students to become informed and responsible consumers and act as ambassadors for quality, safety and positive change in society.
The major attraction of the programme was an interactive parliamentary session in which students assumed different stakeholder roles, including BIS/Standards, Consumers, Industry/Manufacturers, Health & Safety, Government/Regulatory Authorities, Question & Opposition and Media/Documentation.
Through debates, presentations, role-play and question-answer sessions, students discussed the importance of standards in ensuring the quality and safety of everyday products.
Real-life examples involving electrical appliances, helmets, LPG equipment, packaged drinking water, pressure cookers, cement and gold jewellery were discussed during the deliberations.
The parliamentary proceedings were chaired by Dr. Master Showkat Ali, HoD, Department of English, while Meher, student volunteer, moderated the event. The jury composed Dr. Showkat Ahmad Malik, Dr. Arfat Firdous and Dr. Haneef.
Five students were adjudged among the best debaters and were awarded cash prizes of ₹1,000, ₹750, ₹500 and ₹250, respectively. Refreshments were also served to the participants.
The programme provided students with an experiential learning platform to understand the role of standards in protecting public health, ensuring product safety, promoting quality and safeguarding consumer interests.
The event concluded with a collective message that “Quality, Safety and Standards” are essential for building consumer confidence and a safer society.
The enthusiastic participation of students made the Standards Parliament an engaging initiative to promote awareness about standardisation and responsible consumer behaviour.
