Silchar: Police seized cough syrup, Yaba tablets and suspected ganja in Hailakandi, Cachar and Sribhumi districts, arresting five people, officials said on Monday.In Hailakandi, Ramnathpur police intercepted a truck travelling from Guwahati to Manipur on Sunday night following a tip-off. A search led to the recovery of 10 cartons containing 1,600 bottles of cough syrup concealed in the vehicle.Police estimated the consignment’s value at around Rs 15 lakh. Preliminary investigation suggested that the syrup was being transported to Manipur, officials said.The truck’s driver, Sabirul Islam Laskar, and his assistant, Masuk Ahmed Talukdar, were arrested. The vehicle was seized, and police are probing the source of the consignment and the alleged trafficking network.In a separate operation in Cachar, police seized 61.937 kg of suspected ganja from a car intercepted on Station Road in the Nagapatty area of Tarapur, Silchar.Acting on information, police searched the vehicle and recovered the suspected contraband.The driver, Ranjit Debbarma, was arrested. Police said he is a resident of Karamcherra under Manughat police station in Tripura’s Dhalai district.The car was seized, and legal proceedings were initiated. Police are investigating the source and intended destination of the suspected ganja, and the possible involvement of others.In another operation, police seized 30,000 Yaba tablets valued at around Rs 1.5 crore from a car at Marzatkandi in Sribhumi district on Sunday evening and arrested two suspected drug peddlers, officials said.Acting on inputs, Badarpur police intercepted the vehicle, which was allegedly travelling from Mizoram towards Badarpur. The occupants, identified as Dilwar Hussain (28) and Abdus Sahid (38), were arrested. Police are probing the consignment’s source, intended destination and possible links to others.
