J&K session starts on stormy note; BJP protests in Well; NC, Congress seek statehood

The autumn session of the J&K assembly began on a stormy note on Monday, as BJP disrupted the Question Hour and protested against the ruling NC in the Well of the House over its alleged governance failures over the last two years.

NC and its alliance partner, Congress, responded with slogans demanding the restoration of statehood, reminding BJP of the commitments made by the BJP-led Centre in the Supreme Court and Parliament.

BJP legislators, led by leader of the Opposition Sunil Sharma, disrupted the assembly proceedings soon after obituary references ended. BJP leaders held posters against the government, demanding the regularisation of daily-wage workers, and raised slogans over the electricity hike and employment crisis. BJP MLAs were aggressively countered by Congress legislators, who reminded BJP of the promise of “restoration of statehood”. CPI(M) leader Md Yusuf Tarigami and Awami Ittehad Party MLA Sheikh Khursheed also joined Congress.
Meanwhile, Opposition PDP leader Waheed Para moved an adjournment motion to discuss the rationalisation of reservations in J&K.
