NEW DELHI: A house servant allegedly planned to flee to Nepal, open a restaurant or cafe and build a lavish lifestyle with the proceeds of a burglary involving jewellery and cash worth around Rs 3 crore in north Delhi, police said.The burglary case was solved within a week with complete recovery of the stolen property, Delhi Police said on Thursday.Two men were arrested and a 17-year-old was apprehended as a child in conflict with law (CCL) in connection with the case.Police recovered 117 gold and diamond jewellery items, Rs 4.34 lakh in cash and the bags used to carry the stolen property.The burglary was reported on September 6 from an apartment on Mall Road under Timarpur police station.The house was locked as the family had gone abroad on September 2. When the family members learnt that the locks had been broken, they found the almirahs opened and valuables missing.The complainant told police that two domestic servants, Anil and Vicky, had been hired the previous month and both were missing after the burglary. Their phones were also switched off.
300 CCTV cameras, 3 states and a trail of bags
Police formed teams from Timarpur police station, Burari police station’s Crack Team and the North district Operation Cell to trace the suspects and recover the stolen property.More than 300 CCTV cameras across Delhi, Bihar and Jharkhand were examined during the investigation.Police also analysed call detail records and digital footprints and used technical surveillance and ground intelligence to track the suspects.CCTV footage showed the accused leaving the house with two backpacks. They travelled by auto-rickshaw from Mall Road to ISBT, changed vehicles and went towards New Delhi Railway Station.From there, they took another auto-rickshaw towards Mukarba Chowk, after which their movement could not initially be traced.Technical surveillance later indicated that the 17-year-old had contacted relatives in Jharkhand from Darbhanga Railway Station on September 8.Police teams were sent to Darbhanga and Giridih, where the teenager was apprehended on September 10.
Jewellery buried 5ft underground
The investigation then led police to Sukha Nagar near Simrahi in Bihar, where Anil Kamat’s in-laws lived.Police said a red bag matching one seen in CCTV footage was found hidden under a bed at the house. Another bag containing Rs 4.34 lakh was recovered from sacks of hay.The stolen jewellery was found in a bag buried beneath the floor of another room. Police excavated the spot and recovered the bag from about five feet underground after around an hour of digging.Anil Kamat was later detained in the Pratapganj area and formally arrested on September 16. His father-in-law, Dev Chandra Sah, was also arrested for allegedly possessing stolen property.Police said interrogation and investigation revealed that Kamat and his associates allegedly planned to travel to Nepal, open a restaurant or cafe and use the proceeds of the burglary to establish a lavish lifestyle.
Three accused, complete recovery
Police identified Kamat, 22, as a house servant from Supaul, Bihar. He had previously been involved in a burglary case involving around Rs 1.25 crore in Shalimar Bagh, police said.Sah, 49, is a vegetable vendor from Supaul, while the third accused is a 17-year-old house servant from Giridih, Jharkhand.The recovered jewellery and cash were seized following due procedure, with the recovery proceedings videographed through the e-Sakshya app, police said.
