Patna: The Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) has proposed a Rs590-croreredevelopment of the New Market area near Patna Junction, envisaging a modern multi-storey commercial complex and a dedicated vending zone under the public-private partnership (PPP) model.The draft detailed project report (DPR), prepared by an agency, is currently under examination. The proposed project will cover the stretch from Mahavir Mandir to the mosque opposite Patna Junction and the adjoining GPO area.The redevelopment aims to reorganise the existing market, which houses nearly 396 shops, while creating improved facilities for street vendors. Under the plan, PMC will provide the land and a private partner will undertake development and operation of the project.PMC commissioner Yashpal Meena said the redevelopment would enhance commercial and civic amenities, improve facilities for vendors, create additional public spaces and generate new revenue streams for the civic body.The proposed commercial hub will have a built-up area of nearly 40,000 sqm, including two basement parking levels, retail spaces, multiplexes, food courts, gaming zones and office or hotel facilities spread across seven upper floors.A separate G+3 vendor market with a built-up area of 4,600 sqm has also been proposed. The overall development will cover about 44,590 sqm.Officials said the project has been designed to improve pedestrian movement, parking and traffic circulation around Patna Junction, while strengthening multimodal connectivity and universal accessibility. Green features such as rainwater harvesting, solar energy systems and scientific waste management have also been incorporated into the proposal.The final DPR, including project cost and implementation timelines, will be placed before the PMC standing committee and board for approval before the tendering process begins.
