New Delhi: Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) has issued directions barring idol immersions in the Yamuna and other waterbodies. Violators would have to pay an environmental compensation of Rs 50,000.“No idol immersion shall be allowed in the river Yamuna and other waterbodies, except in designated places identified by local bodies/authorities,” DPCC said. The directive was released keeping in mind the ongoing Ganesh Puja and upcoming Durga Puja.The direction, dated Sept 9, was issued under the Water (Prevention & Control of Pollution) Act, 1974. Under this, plaster of Paris (POP) idols should be immersed only at designated sites identified by local bodies or authorities. DPCC, however, has said that the bar is for all idol immersions.Idol immersions have been a longstanding concern because of the toxic chemicals used in paints and idol-making materials, the anti-pollution watchdog said. The order said that chemical paints and dyes used while making the idols may contain mercury, zinc oxide, chromium, lead and cadmium, which can harm aquatic life and pose health risks to humans too.The committee cited studies showing deterioration in water quality after immersions, particularly in terms of conductivity, biochemical oxygen demand and heavy-metal concentration.Urban local bodies have been directed to create temporary artificial ponds close to localities and residential areas. Municipal bodies and Delhi Police will check vehicles and goods carriers entering Delhi carrying idols.The order also asks residents and puja committees to encourage immersion at the household or residential level in buckets or temporary artificial ponds. The decanted water can subsequently be used for gardening, it says.The DPCC has directed idol makers to use natural clay, biodegradable materials and natural colours.District magistrates have been tasked with enforcing the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) directive.DPCC said it will do water-quality assessments before idol immersion, during immersion and after immersion.
