Prosecutors announced on Tuesday that they will not seek the death penalty against Nick Reiner in connection with the killings of his parents, actor-director Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Singer Reiner, who were fatally stabbed at their Los Angeles residence late last year.
Charges against Nick Reiner
The 32-year-old was charged with first-degree murder on December 16, just two days after the shocking deaths of the couple, aged 78 and 70. A grand jury allegation filed this summer claimed that Nick Reiner had been lying in wait before carrying out the killings.
Why the death penalty was ruled out
According to the Associated Press, special circumstances cited in the case, including multiple killings and the use of a dangerous weapon, a knife, had made Nick Reiner eligible for capital punishment. However, Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman confirmed that this decision would not be pursued after a detailed review process. Hochman noted that his office spoke with the families of both Rob and Michele Reiner and also examined mitigating factors favouring the accused before finalising the decision. As a result, the maximum punishment Nick Reiner could now receive if convicted is life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.
Legal proceedings so far
Nick Reiner has yet to enter a plea despite appearing in court twice. Following his resignation from the case, his former defence attorney, Alan Jackson, firmly stated, “Pursuant to the laws of California, Nick Reiner is not guilty of murder.” Jackson stepped down for undisclosed reasons, which he described as beyond his and his client’s control, after which a public defender was assigned to represent Reiner.
