LUCKNOW: Ever found yourself stuck at the same traffic bottleneck and wondered why nothing is being done about it? The Lucknow Traffic Police now wants commuters to do more than just complain. It wants them to help identify problems and suggest solutions.Under its new ‘Sahbhagita’ (Participation) initiative, the traffic police is inviting citizens to flag recurring traffic congestion, unsafe U-turns, pedestrian hazards, school-zone traffic issues and parking bottlenecks through a QR code-linked Google Form. Citizens can also propose practical measures to address these problems.The police is seeking more than just a description of the issue. Participants have been asked to submit photographs, the exact location and GPS coordinates, along with details such as when the problem occurs, what changes they believe are needed and how their proposed solution could improve traffic flow or road safety.DCP (Traffic) Raveena Tyagi said the initiative aims to turn everyday commuters into the traffic police’s eyes and ears on the ground.“A dangerous turn that a commuter crosses every morning, a junction that gets choked during office hours, or a footpath routinely encroached upon by vehicles could become the starting point for an official intervention. Citizens do not need to be traffic engineers to participate. A clear observation and a practical suggestion can be just as valuable,” Tyagi said.She added that citizens may also submit annotated photographs, simple sketches or maps. While participants can mention the government department they believe is responsible for the issue, doing so is not mandatory.Tyagi said the department had received several detailed suggestions from citizens over the past few months. After evaluation, several proposals were implemented, leading to visible improvements at the identified locations.Encouraged by these results, the traffic police is now looking to expand public participation and create a structured platform for commuters to report problems and recommend solutions.Each traffic issue or location must be submitted through a separate form. Citizens may also share their name, mobile number and WhatsApp contact details for follow-up communication, if required.According to the traffic police, all suggestions will undergo ground-level verification and technical assessment. Officials will evaluate factors such as road safety, site conditions, technical feasibility and compliance with relevant standards.“Where necessary, the traffic police will coordinate with the concerned departments for technical examination, approvals and implementation. The final decision on the nature and priority of any intervention will depend on jurisdiction, available resources and other relevant considerations,” Tyagi said.The initiative is open to individual commuters, Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), traders’ bodies, educational institutions, transport organisations and road-safety groups.
