Patna: State-owned SJVN Ltd said on Friday that the 660 MW Unit-II of its Buxar Thermal Power Project in Bihar will begin commercial electricity supply at midnight on Saturday, bringing the plant’s full 1,320 MW capacity into operation.In an exchange filing, SJVN said its wholly owned subsidiary, SJVN Thermal Private Limited, is scheduled to achieve commercial operation of Unit-II of the 1,320 MW (2×660 MW) project at 0000 hours on Sept 12. The project is located at Chausa in Buxar district.The first 660 MW unit of the project began commercial supply on Nov 14, 2025. With the commissioning of Unit-II, the entire installed capacity of the plant will be available for generation, an official said.The Buxar plant is expected to generate 9,828.72 million units of electricity annually. Of this, 85% has been allocated to Bihar under a long-term power purchase agreement with Bihar State Power Holding Company Limited (BSPHCL). Officials said the project will significantly improve power availability in Bihar and strengthen the state’s energy security.The plant uses supercritical technology, which is designed to deliver higher efficiency and lower environmental impact compared with conventional thermal generation.SJVN signed a memorandum of understanding with BSPHCL and Bihar Power Infrastructure Company on Jan 17, 2013, to set up the 2×660 MW plant. It took over Buxar Bijli Company Private Limited on July 4, 2013, and renamed it SJVN Thermal Private Limited on Oct 17, 2013.
