Mumbai: Motorists will no longer have to replace the FASTag pasted on their vehicles every time they want to change the bank that issued it. Centre on Friday launched ‘OneTag’, a portability facility that will allow users to shift to another issuer bank while retaining the existing physical tag.Union road transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari launched the facility at Global Fintech Fest 2026 in Mumbai. The initiative is aimed at giving FASTag users greater choice and simplifying the process of changing issuer banks.At present, a motorist wanting to change the FASTag issuer has to close the existing tag and undergo fresh onboarding, including obtaining a new physical tag. With OneTag, the user can retain the tag already affixed to the vehicle and switch the issuer.Importantly, after successful portability, the existing Tag ID and vehicle registration number will remain unchanged, the ministry said.The portability service will be made available through NHAI’s Rajmargyatra mobile app.The change does not simply transfer the old FASTag wallet to the new bank. The existing issuer bank will remain responsible for the previous wallet and related matters, including refunds, pending transactions and other obligations. The newly selected issuer bank will complete the onboarding and provide services after successful portability.This could make it easier for motorists to move to another issuer if they are dissatisfied with the existing bank’s service or want to use another bank’s FASTag-related offering, without having to remove and replace a functioning tag.Gadkari said the next goal was to move towards a barrier-free tolling system with zero stoppage and zero waiting time, using artificial intelligence and automatic number-plate recognition.He said technology-driven tolling could improve efficiency, cut waiting times and enhance the mobility experience of national highway users.
