Patna: A special vigilance court in Patna on Friday convicted former assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Badri Ram in a 2011 bribery case and sentenced him to three years of rigorous imprisonment. The court also imposed a fine of Rs13,000 under each of the relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act, with the sentences to run concurrently. In case of non-payment of the fine, Ram will undergo an additional three months of simple imprisonment.Special Judge Atul Kumar Singh of the Special Vigilance Court, Patna, convicted Ram, who was posted at Bihta police station in Patna district at the time of the offence.Vigilance Investigation Bureau (VIB) DG Jitendra Singh Gangwar said the case was registered on the complaint of Kishore Kumar, a resident of Ghordasahan in East Champaran district. “Badri had allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs20,000 from the complainant for sending a request letter to the Motor Vehicle Inspector (MVI) for inspection of an accident-damaged truck so that the vehicle could be released,” he said.The VIB laid a trap and arrested Ram on Sept 3, 2011, while allegedly accepting Rs13,000 as a bribe.During the investigation, the then investigating officer Mahendra Kumar Sinha, a police inspector with the VIB, filed the chargesheet in the case. The prosecution examined 10 witnesses before the court. Kishor Kumar Singh, in charge special public prosecutor (Vigilance), represented the Bihar govt in the case.“With Friday’s verdict, a total of 20 corruption cases investigated by the VIB have resulted in convictions in 2026 so far,” Gangwar said.
