Nagpur: A 22-year-old engineering student riding a bike died after being tossed off the Sakkardara flyover on Thursday morning. He was left bloodied after the 40-foot plunge even ashis scooter lay under the bridge with minor damages.Passers-by alerted cops, who rushed the youth, Prajeet Wahane, to Govt Medical College and Hospital, where died during treatment. His body was sent for autopsy and later identified by family members.Police suspect Prajeet may have been speaking on the phone and swerved left to avoid a head-on situation, when his bike spun out of control and he was flung over the edge. Sakkardara police registered a case of accidental death.Prajeet left home after speaking to a woman friend and promised to return within 15 minutes. A birthday gift he had brought for his friend lay intact in the bike, said sources. The accident took place around 10.15am when Prajeet, resident of Gayatri Nagar in Nandanvan, was driving from Awari Chowk to Bhande Plot Chowk.Prajeet’s cell phone was found near his body with its screen smashed. “We somehow accessed contacts on the phone to alert family and friends,” said a cop from Sakkardara.Police suspect high-speed driving and loss of control led to the tragedy, but the exact cause is under investigation. CCTV footage from the area is being examined to determine whether the bike hit an object or he lost balance, or whether he was pushed off the flyover.Neighbours described Prajeet as a quiet student who travelled daily through the same route. The flyover, a busy link in east Nagpur, has been witness to several accidents over the years.
