“Sitting on the campus and writing ‘Kishanji’ or any anti-national name, or raising ‘Lal Salaam’, will not be tolerated. Those who raise slogans of ‘Kashmir Mange Azadi’ will be answered in Netaji’s language, not Gandhi’s,” he said.
The CM said this as the assembly on Thursday passed by voice vote the West Bengal Universities and Colleges (Administration and Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026, that empowers the government to transfer teaching and non-teaching staffers from one state university to another. The bill was tabled by higher education minister Jagannath Chattopadhyay during a special session of the state assembly.
The West Bengal University Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026, was also passed on Thursday.
Adhikari said that those who say “Red Salute Kishanji” or raise “azadi” slogans were being identified. “There have been 34 years of Left rule followed by 14 years of misrule by the Trinamool, and we will remove them all,” he said.
He said the government had records of the activities of members of Jadavpur University Teachers Association and knew “when and where” they had played various roles in the past.
The CM said that those who “brainwash the students” must be given “proper medicine”. A commission would be formed if necessary. Taking a dig at the CPI(M), the CM said, “I have brought everything along. I have everything on what you did and when. I have your entire history.”The CM said that in states like Kerala, where the Left had run the government for many years, such a law already existed, in addition to Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh. The process was also underway in Gujarat and Bihar, he said.
“The bill will balance the autonomy of institutions with their accountability towards the government. It would not impact PhD supervision and projects. Those unhappy with the provisions of the bill are welcome to quit their jobs,” he said.
