Gurgaon: The city is gearing up for a network of more than 4,000 CCTV cameras.By Dec, 4,287 CCTV cameras will put traffic violators, red-light jumpers and speeding motorists under tighter surveillance.The cameras will be integrated with GMDA’s integrated command and control centre (ICCC), allowing officials to monitor traffic and violations in real time.GMDA is undertaking the installation of 2,722 cameras at 258 locations under Phase-II, adding to the 1,200 already operational, while another 365 cameras are being installed at key junctions through a CSR initiative.With this, over 4,200 cameras will be functional across the city, strengthening traffic enforcement, improving road safety and enabling round-the-clock monitoring by the end of this year.Under Phase-II of CCTV cameras, the metropolitan authority is installing 1,406 automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras, 102 red-light violation detection (RLVD) cameras, 74 pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) cameras, 759 general surveillance cameras, 347 face-recognition cameras and 20 speed radars.The new cameras will add to the 1,200 cameras installed under Phase-I, which comprise 750 general surveillance, 308 ANPR, 102 RLVD, 28 PTZ and 48 face-recognition cameras.While reviewing the progress of the CCTV projects, GMDA CEO PC Meena directed the officials to expedite the ongoing work.GMDA officials said the expanded network would reduce dependence on manual traffic enforcement and help identify violations more efficiently. ANPR, RLVD and speed-radar systems will enable detection of violations and support automatic challaning.“The surveillance network should be used not merely for monitoring but for improving compliance with traffic rules, promoting disciplined driving and reducing traffic violations, accidents and fatalities,” Meena said.Another 365 CCTV cameras and 29 speed radars are being installed at 23 key junctions under an MoU between GMDA, Maruti Suzuki India Limited and Utkrisht Society for Safe Haryana.These cover major traffic corridors, including SPR, Golf Course Extension Road, MG Road, Old Delhi Road and the Cyber City-Golf Course stretch.The project covers eight junctions along SPR and Golf Course Extension Road, four between Cyber City and Golf Course, five along MG Road and six along Old Delhi Road.In addition, 1,000 more CCTV cameras at 69 junctions are also being proposed to be installed under the CSR initiative.The proposed locations could cover Manesar, IMT, Sohna Road, Golf Course Extension Road, Sushant Lok, Kanhai and Palam Vihar corridors.GMDA has also decided to expand CCTV coverage beyond traffic corridors to critical drainage infrastructure.Starting and confluence points of major drains, recurring waterlogging locations and garbage-dumping points will be brought under surveillance.Through the ICCC, officials will be able to respond more quickly to blockages, dumping and other problems.Meena also directed officials to repair and repaint Jersey barriers and install reflective strips to make them more visible to motorists, particularly at night. Sharp ends of road dividers are to be repaired and fitted with reflectors, especially at accident-prone locations.Separately, Meena has directed that all major infrastructure assets created by GMDA in future, including roads, surface drains and manholes, be GIS-mapped.The move is aimed at creating a comprehensive digital record of infrastructure locations and their status, making future identification and maintenance easier.During a review meeting with the engineering wing, he also emphasised stronger quality control in major infrastructure projects.Under a new phased execution approach, contractors will first have to complete an initial 100–200 metre stretch of a project.The completed section will be inspected before work is extended to the remaining stretch.Further execution will be allowed only after the initial work is found satisfactory in terms of quality, design and execution.
