Gurgaon: Following the building collapse in Satya Niketan, MCG commissioner Pradeep Dahiya has directed the joint commissioners of all zones to submit details of unsafe buildings in their respective areas, along with information on demolition orders already issued against such structures.The directions come amid concerns over the civic body’s enforcement of safety measures for buildings identified as structurally unsafe. However, MCG has not done any fresh survey of unsafe buildings in the last one year.“We are in the process of preparing this report,” said an MCG official familiar with the matter.The civic body had, in Feb this year, identified 45 unsafe buildings across the city. Of these, six buildings have since been demolished, while 21 have been repaired, according to a report submitted by MCG to Haryana Human Rights Commission (HRC).The report was submitted after HRC in Aug last year had criticised the civic body over an alleged lack of enforcement and inaction against unsafe buildings. The latest directions are aimed at obtaining an updated zone-wise status of such structures and determining the action already taken against unsafe buildings.At the time of the Feb assessment, Gurgaon was divided into four zones. Zone 1 had 18 buildings on the list; two were demolished, seven could not be located at the reported sites and nine were found to be safe. In zone 2, one of six identified buildings was demolished, three were repaired by their owners and two could not be located.Zone 3 had the highest number of identified unsafe structures, with 20 buildings. Of these, two were demolished, nine were repaired by their owners and nine could not be located at the reported sites. The lone building identified in zone 4 was demolished.MCG chief engineer Vijay Dhaka confirmed the numbers to TOI: “We have also demolished six of the 45 buildings identified as unsafe or dangerous.”Asked about the buildings not found at their reported locations, Dhaka said: “It implied that either these buildings were demolished or repaired, so unsafe buildings were not found at the site.” Buildings identified in the Feb report are located in areas including Badshahpur, Kherki Daula and Hari Nagar.MCG had prepared the Feb report after HHRC, in Aug last year, criticised the civic body over alleged inaction and inadequate enforcement against unsafe structures. The latest directive is meant to establish a current zone-wise status of such buildings and assess action taken on those with pending demolition orders. It is expected to give MCG an updated picture of buildings that remain potentially hazardous and require further enforcement.
