Panaji: Two suspected breast cancer cases, 19 benign tumours and six oral pre-cancerous conditions were detected during a cancer screening abhiyan camp at Mayem primary health centre on Saturday.The camp, jointly organised by health services, GMC and Goa Dental College, was attended by 186 people, including 146 women and 40 men. It provided gynaecology, surgery and dental outpatient services.An official said 98 women underwent gynaecological evaluation, including history-taking and clinical examination, with emphasis on cervical cancer screening. Two suspected breast cancer cases identified through examination and imaging were referred urgently for definitive evaluation.Pap smears were collected from 76 beneficiaries, who were counselled about follow-up and collection of results. Two ultrasonography examinations of the abdomen and pelvis were conducted based on clinical findings.At the surgery OPD, 64 beneficiaries were examined, focusing on breast complaints and lump evaluation. Clinical breast examinations led to targeted imaging, with 20 sonomammographies performed. Nineteen benign tumours were detected.The dental OPD conducted oral examinations of 79 beneficiaries to detect pre-malignant changes. Six pre-cancerous cases were identified and referred to GDC. These comprised one case each of tobacco pouch keratosis, leukoplakia, oral lichen planus and erythroplakia, and two cases of tobacco-induced mucositis. Another lesion was noted for follow-up.The camp was attended by 25 senior and junior resident doctors and six paramedical staff from GMC, Goa Dental College and health services. Mayem MLA Premendra Shet, cancer detection abhiyaan nodal officer Dr Jagadish Cacodcar, assistant nodal officer Dr Somnath Perni, GDC consultant Dr Vinayak Kamat and Mayem primary health centre medical officer Dr Urmila Gauns were present.
