Nandigram in Purba Medinipur was vacated by West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, who won the seat twice, in 2021 and 2026, but vacated it after he also won from Bhawanipur in 2026.
Adhikari defeated the then Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee from Nandigram in 2021. He also defeated the former CM from Bhawanipore in the heart of Kolkata in 2026 by a margin of more than 15,000 votes.
Adhikari has called on the people of Nandigram to ensure that the BJP candidate wins the by-election by a record margin. Adhikari won the seat this time by a margin of more than 6,500 votes, defeating TMC’s Pabitra Kar.
The by-polls have been necessitated following the resignations of Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari and AJUP founder Humayun Kabir from their respective Nandigram and Rejinagar seats.
The poll process will begin with the issuance of the gazette notification on September 9.
The last date for filing nominations is September 16. Scrutiny will be held on September 17, while candidates can withdraw their nominations until September 19, the EC said in a release.The entire election process will be completed by October 11, it said.
Kabir won both the Rejinagar and Nowda seats in Murshidabad in the 2026 Assembly polls, while Adhikari emerged victorious from the Nandigram and Bhawanipur constituencies.
