Ranchi: Traffic police in state capital issued 3,39,010 challans on traffic rule violators between Jun 1 and Aug 31 this year. Wrong parking topped the list of offences followed by motorists riding two-wheelers without helmets, department data has showed.Sustained crackdown resulted in a steady a steady month-on-month decline in violations. While 1.24 lakh challans were issued in Jun, the numbers dipped to 1.21 lakh in Jul. In Aug, 94,669 challans were issued to violators.ASI Sugreev Kumar Yadav said motorists are now cautious while picking parking spots for their vehicles. “The number of cars and bikes parked on roadside has gone down. They are now thinking twice before parking their vehicles at non-designated spots,” Yadav said.Over 50,500 challans for wrong parking were issued in Jun. The number rose to 56,032 in Jul before plunging to 32,034 in Aug.Traffic SP Rakesh Singh said while enforcement drives are yielding results, a genuine shift in public mindset remains crucial. “Punitive action is making some changes, but the real change will only come when people will take responsibility and understand that traffic rules are made for their safety,” Singh said.He added that the department is heavily focusing on outreach among students. “Officials are conducting regular awareness drives at schools and colleges so that the children understand the importance of traffic rules and not just implement it in their personal lives but also take the message home to adults,” Singh said.However, residents feel compliance remains superficial. “We still notice bikers carrying helmet on their bike handle and wearing it only at intersections and roundabouts where there are cameras or officials deployed,” said Arun Kumar Singh, a schoolteacher.
