The university also prohibited entry of an ex-student into the campus until further order.Among those debarred are UG economics student Asmil Abdul Majeed, PG international relations student Jahit Rahaman Ali Khan, UG philosophy student Rohan Ball, and former student of the Film Studies department Sagnik Saha.“Based on the preliminary information received by the authorities, prima facie it appears that 4 of them were involved in the incident that led to the physical assault of 2 professors on Friday. Considering their involvement, the Vice-Chancellor decided to debar 3 current students from all institutional activities, including attending classes and appearing for exams, for at least 2 weeks. If they violate this, disciplinary action will be taken as per university rules,” said a senior official. He added, “The ex-student is prohibited from entering the campus until further order, failing which necessary legal action shall be initiated as per law of the land.”Violence flared up at Jadavpur University campus on Friday afternoon as students’ groups engaged in a brawl near the Science-Arts intersection. Seeing a tense situation between groups of students, several teachers stepped forward to mediate. “When the teachers managed to calm the situation, a few students suddenly arrived from elsewhere. Among them were these 4 students. 2 of them arrived in the university’s ambulance from Aurobindo Bhavan to the Science-Arts intersection, while 2 of them were already present. They pushed into the crowd and began hurling abuse and striking people at random. One of their blows injured Professor Rajyeswar Sinha and Lalit Lalitav Mohakud,” said a witness.A security guard said, “Among those debarred are students who are very aggressive and often heckle us if we try to restrict them from unlawful activities on campus.”Strongly reacting to the campus violence, the Jadavpur University Teachers’ Association on Monday wrote to VC Chiranjib Bhattacharjee, demanding exemplary action against the students involved by Tuesday; failing which they will resort to cease work and administrative non-cooperation.The university formed an enquiry committee with 3 external members, the pro-VC, and the deputy registrar to investigate the incident on Monday and requested submissions of depositions in sealed envelopes within February 27.
