Kolkata: A spell of intense rain, accompanied by thunderstorm and lightning strikes lashed the northern parts of Kolkata, North 24 Parganas, Howrah and Hooghly on Saturday evening. The rain lasted for close to an hour-and-half and was accompanied by a wind speed of 30-40 km/hour. While the south and central parts of the city received a spell of moderate shower, the north was drenched, with several areas getting waterlogged. While Kolkata recorded traces of rain till 5.30 pm, Dum Dum clocked 35 mm and Salt Lake received 20 mm of rain.An upper air trough and the monsoon trough triggered the rain, said the Met office. “The conditions were favourable for a heavy spell across a large part of south Bengal, including the northern part of city and surrounding districts. As a result, Dum Dum and Salt Lake, too, received a heavuier spell than south Kolkata. Since similar conditions will persist on Sunday, some other parts of south Bnegal may receive a heavy spell on Sunday, while intermittent rain will continue,” said HR Biswas, deputy director-general of meteorology.Earlier in the day, the city remained cloudy and received intermittent spells of rain even as a low-pressure area weakened over central India. Kolkata and south Bengal could receive light to moderate rain, thundershowers and remain cloudy on Sunday, said the Met office.While Alipore Met office recorded traces of rain on Saturday, parts of central and north Kolkata received spells of moderate rain in the afternoon and evening. Some parts of Hooghly, Nadia, Murshidabad and North 24 Parganas were lashed by spells of heavy rain and thundershowers with wind speed reaching 30-40 km/hour on Saturday evening.On Saturday, Kolkata recorded a maximum temperature of 32.9°C and a minimum of 27.1°C
