Kolkata: With commuters facing inconvenience on the battered roads on Majerhat-Mominpore-Ekbalpore stretch — often caught in traffic jams — the top brass of Kolkata Police stepped in. A team of senior traffic cops, led by commissioner of police, Ajay Nand, urged the civic authorities to repair the roads urgently. Following the top cop’s request, KMC started to repair stretches on Burdwan Road on Thursday. The southwest traffic guard said KMC would work on three consecutive nights.The KMC has begun repairing roads in the Hastings area. “The first patchwork was washed away due to rain in the past 48 hours,” said an officer from Vidyasagar Guard, adding more work would be carried out on the stretch. Meanwhile, the southwest guard that manages Mominpore has been receiving flak amid repeated traffic snarls on the cratered roads at Mominpore. The senior officials have asked forlarger deployment of cops at Mominpore. They have asked personnel from three other traffic guards, including Bhowanipore, Vidyasagar and Diamond Harbour, to help manage traffic with diversions.Cops had to allow vehicles to temporarily crossover and drive on the opposite flank on Mominpore stretch throughout Thursday. This traffic arrangement is known as fouling. This technique was introduced for vehicles moving from Majerhat as well as Mayurbhanj Road to ensure uninterrupted vehicular flow from Behala to central Kolkata, unhindered by Metro work on Diamond Harbour Road.“We had joint inspections by KMC and RVNL. But nothing moved much. Hence, we were forced to ask KMC to step in. KMC wants to put fresh pitch on the road,” said an officer. “We have decided to take up a patchwork repair of the stretches. Later, RVNL will take up a thorough repair,” said the civic official.
