Nagpur: Relatives of a 36-year-old man who died following a cardiac arrest on Sunday created a ruckus at a private hospital near Awasthi Chowk in Jafar Nagar on Wednesday evening, allegedly damaging property, including television sets.The relatives also had a heated confrontation with hospital staff, accusing a cardiologist of negligence in treating the patient. Videos of the incident circulated on social media, showing a scuffle between the relatives and hospital employees.Mohsin Ayaz Khan, a resident of Jafar Nagar, died around 4pm on Sunday after suffering a cardiac arrest. His family alleged that no doctor attended to him after he was brought to the hospital’s emergency ward around 11am.According to the family, hospital staff informed them that a doctor could be called on a Sunday only after payment of a substantial amount. The relatives claimed they were willing to make the payment but alleged that the cardiologist reached the hospital around 3.30pm, by which time Khan had died.Khan’s last rites were performed on Monday. On Wednesday, his relatives returned to the hospital seeking an explanation for the alleged delay in treatment and asking why his ECG had not been assessed earlier. In a video shared on social media, some family members claimed they could have shifted Khan to another hospital had they been informed in time that a specialist would not be available promptly.Another relative alleged that the hospital’s in-house pharmacy delayed billing emergency medicines, further affecting treatment.Tension prevailed in the area as a large crowd gathered outside the hospital. Local residents joined Khan’s relatives in raising slogans against the hospital and demanding action against those found responsible.A close aide of the family claimed the same cardiologist later certified Khan’s death as resulting from cardiac arrest, following which no postmortem examination was conducted.Mankapur police rushed to the hospital as tensions escalated and brought the situation under control. The cardiologist and some of Khan’s relatives were taken to the police station, where statements from both sides were recorded. No offence had been registered till press time.Sources said police were considering action against Khan’s relatives for the alleged vandalism and disturbance under the Maharashtra Medicare Service Persons and Medicare Service Institutions (Prevention of Violence and Damage or Loss to Property) Act.
