MUMBAI: A benzene leak from a tanker carrying around 28 tonnes of the chemical was reported near Mysore Colony on Mahul Road in Chembur (East) on Monday evening.The incident soon prompted authorities to cordon off a 500-metre area as a precautionary measure.The leakage was reported at around 8pm near the Monorail station, according to the civic body.As part of the emergency response, benzene was decanted from the affected tanker into an empty tanker.The operation was completed successfully, following which both tankers were shifted to the BPCL refinery premises.The 500-metre area around the site will remain cordoned off until the tankers are safely moved from the location.Traffic in the area has also been diverted to ensure the safety of motorists and residents while the shifting operation is underway.Necessary security arrangements have been put in place around the affected area as a precautionary measure.No injuries have been reported so far.
