KALYAN: When Cheena Kumar, 33, fell from the 7th floor at a construction site in Ambernath on July 28, an iron reinforcement rod pierced his body, passing through his pelvis and lower abdomen before protruding through his abdomen.Against odds, Kumar survived the fall, the horrific injury and massive blood loss. He is now back with his family in Uttar Pradesh and is able to walk with support.“I never thought I would survive,” said Kumar, recalling the moments before he lost consciousness. A farmer from Siddharth Nagar district,UP, Kumar had moved to Ambernath just six months earlier to take up his first job outside agriculture.After his fall, he was rushed to Fortis Hospital, Kalyan, where doctors performed an emergency surgery as his blood pressure was critically low.He is the first member of his family to leave farming for construction work. His wife, two children, parents and brother continue to live in the village.The fall left him with a severe open fracture of his left thigh bone, extensive soft-tissue injuries and haemorrhagic shock. About 20-25cm of the rod remained protruding from his body.He was rushed to Fortis Hospital, Kalyan, where scans showed that the rod had pierced his small intestine at several points and passed through the iliac bone. It had narrowly missed the ureter and major blood vessels supplying his left leg.With his blood pressure critically low, doctors proceeded with emergency surgery after reviewing the scan images rather than waiting for the formal CT report. The rod was removed, the intestinal injuries were repaired, and the contaminated wounds were cleaned.Kumar recovered without developing an infection and was discharged after about a week.He has since returned to Uttar Pradesh to be with his family. Although he still needs support to walk, he says he is recovering well with their help.“I never thought I would survive, and today I am able to walk with support. I cannot thank the doctors enough for bringing me back on my feet,” he said, still unable to decide if he will return to Mumbai.
