Ahmedabad: A 26-year-old staff nurse living as a paying guest in Thaltej lost Rs 75,000 to cyberfraud after contacting a fake customer care representative while seeking a refund for an online purchase.According to a complaint lodged with Vastrapur police on Saturday, the incident took place on Feb 10. The woman had ordered a teddy bear through an online shopping platform and wanted information regarding its refund. While searching online for the company’s customer care number, she found a mobile number online and contacted it.The person who answered the call claimed to be a customer support executive and assured her that he would help process the refund. He allegedly sent an APK file to her WhatsApp account and asked her to open it.Police said that shortly after she opened the file, her mobile phone was compromised. A sum of Rs 75,000 was subsequently transferred from her bank account to another account without her authorisation.The woman became aware of the transaction after receiving an alert from her bank. She immediately informed her family and friends and contacted the cybercrime helpline to report the incident.In her complaint, she stated that she had not shared her OTP, PIN or any other banking credentials with anyone. She later approached Vastrapur police and filed a formal complaint.Police have launched an investigation to identify the fraudster.
