MUMBAI: An eight-year-old boy crossing a road was killed after being run over by an SUV in Bandra (W) on Sunday afternoon. Police arrested the motorist, Megha Rawal, a 45-year-old nutritionist, and registered an FIR under BNS for ‘culpable homicide not amounting to murder’ besides the Motor Vehicles Act for ‘dangerous driving.’Police said the mishap occurred at St John Baptist Road near Jijamata Garden when Ansh Gupta, a class 3 student from nearby Kadeshwari area, was returning home after playing in a garden. He was trying to cross the road when he was hit by the SUV around 2.15-2.30 pm, police said.Bystanders raised an alarm, after which Rawal, who hails from a business family, halted the vehicle a little ahead. An auto driver then lifted the child into the SUV. Rawal then took the child to Holy Family Hospital where he succumbed around 3.45 pm.Police were informed and she was taken into custody. Gupta’s parents were informed of the crash. The child’s body will be sent for a post-mortem examination. Experts from RTO will be called by Bandra police to examine the SUV and to determine the exact cause of the crash.In a separate crash earlier this year, a four-year-old boy died after an SUV rammed into him in the basement of his housing society in Malad (E).Laksh Singh, the victim, was the only child of his parents and was playing in the basement with friends. Police said the accused walked away without taking him to a doctor. It was also learnt that the accused had been warned by Singh’s family in the past against rash driving inside the society compound, but to no avail.
