Aaryavir has got earned a call-up into the India under-19 squad for three one-dayers against Australia.
The surname is Sehwag. There are shades of his famous father in his ability to carve the ball through the off-side.
Ever since Aaryavir Sehwag held a cricket bat seriously, he has had high expectations to meet. On Thursday, the 18-year-old, the elder son of Virender Sehwag, took a significant step in his development by earning a call-up into the India under-19 squad for three one-dayers against Australia in Rajkot in September.
Interestingly, Anvay Dravid, the younger son of Rahul Dravid, has also been picked in the squad.
Aaryavir was most recently involved with the West Delhi Lions in the third edition of the Delhi Premier League. The young opener featured in two games and scored just 24 runs this season, but Aaryavir’s confidence and infectious energy stayed intact throughout.
“He was in the selection loop throughout. He was playing very well in the nets. He doesn’t have a lot of T20 experience. There were senior players who had done well in the opening slots. So we went with them, but Aaryavir came in later,” West Delhi Lions head coach Udey Gupte told The Hindu.
“When he came on as a substitute fielder for an over in one match, two batters got out. He came back and told me, ‘Look, what happened in one over. If I get to play a match, look at what I do.’ His confidence stands out.”
Aaryavir relishes the slightest width outside off-stump, a trait characteristic of his father. “He generally looks to play with a straight bat. When he gets any width, he slashes it over point and cover just like Viru used to do,” the 69-year-old observed.
In 2024, Aaryavir smashed 297 for Delhi against Meghalaya in the u-19 Cooch Behar Trophy.
