Jamshedpur: Incessant rain over the past 48 hours has caused waterlogging in several low-lying areas, inundating markets, colonies and slums. Sludge and accumulated garbage have worsened residents’ problems.Affected areas include Jawahar Nagar, Old Purulia Road, Azadnagar, Dimna Basti and Transport Nagar in Mango; Bagunnagar, Bagunbasti and Babudih in Sidhgora; Bagbera New Colony and parts of Bagbera panchayat; Garib Nawaz Colony and Eidgah Maidan. Several areas in Kadma, including Shastri Nagar, Ramjanamnagar and Ramnagar, along with slums in Sonari, have also reported waterlogging.Water-filled potholes on Sakchi-Bhuyadih Road, the underbridge near Tata Pigments Gate in Jugsalai, Marine Drive and the Domuhani-Kandra bridge have slowed traffic.The Kharkai and Subernarekha rivers continued to rise but remained below the danger mark till Thursday afternoon.“When the Chandil and Bankabal dams release rainwater, the river levels may rise suddenly. We are closely monitoring the situation,” said a Subernarekha Multipurpose Project official.

Officials of the Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee, Mango Municipal Corporation and Jugsalai Municipal Council are monitoring the situation following directions from East Singhbhum deputy commissioner Rajiv Ranjan.The city recorded 161.8 mm of rain between 8 am on Wednesday and 5 pm on Thursday.The rain also hit market activity on the eve of Raksha Bandhan, disrupting sales of rakhis and sweets. “Every time it rains, we have to keep the rakhis covered,” said Madan Gupta, a shopkeeper.
